BASEBALL EARNS 5-3 VICTORY AT WAGNER IN NEC PLAY

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Monmouth University baseball team posted a 5-3 victory at Wagner on Friday afternoon in Northeast Conference action at Richmond County Bank Ballpark, as senior Nick Meyers tossed 7.0 innings to pace the Hawks to the road victory. With the win, Monmouth improves to 13-14 overall and 7-6 in league play.

Meyers, who allowed just a first inning single over the opening six frames of the game, surrendered a pair of singles in 7.0 innings of work, while improving to 3-1 on the year. Meyers allowed one run on two hits with four strikeouts, while freshman Dan Smith allowed two unearned runs in the final two frames to secure the road win.

Wagner got on the scoreboard in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead, when leadoff hitter Damian Csakai was hit by a pitch, stole second and crossed home on Kevin McDonnell's single through the right side.

Monmouth knotted the score at 1-1 in the third frame when Danny Avella delivered a lead-off double, moved to third on a fielding error and scored on Josh Boyd's fielder's choice groundout.

Designated hitter Nick Pulsonetti launched Monmouth into the lead in the top of the fourth inning when the junior connected on a solo home run to left off Wagner starter Ryan Van Spronsen, pushing the Hawks in front 2-1 on his second homer of the season.

In the top of the fifth, Ryan Terry laced a two-out triple down the leftfield line and made the score 3-1 on Jamie Rosenkranz's single up the middle.

Monmouth increased its lead to 5-1 in the top of the seventh on Mike Casale's two-out, two-run double to left center, which drove in Josh Boyd and Rosenkranz, which knocked Van Spronsen from the game.

Meyers was lifted in favor of Smith in the top of the eighth after issuing a lead-off walk to Gaby Ramirez.

Following a single and a fielder's choice, Wagner had runners at the corners with one out in the home half of the eighth, but Smith got McDonnell to line into a double play to end the frame, which maintained Monmouth's 5-1 advantage.

Leading by four going into the bottom of the ninth, a one-out error, followed by a single allowed Jon Lucas to deliver a two-out, two-run double to pull the Seahawks within 5-3, but Smith struck out Ramirez to end the game.

Terry and Casale each had two hits for Monmouth, while Pulsonetti added his 24th career home run, which ties him for fifth place all-time at MU with Fred Kampf (1995-98).

Monmouth and Wagner continue the Northeast Conference series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. First pitch is set for noon.
