PRINCETON, N.J. - Paced by junior
Ryan Terry's career-high in hits and RBI, including his first career grand slam, the Monmouth University baseball team defeated in-state rival Princeton University, 24-7 on Tuesday afternoon at Clarke Field. Monmouth, which has now won eight straight in the series with the Tigers, improves to 11-14 overall, as second baseman Terry went 5-for-6 with four runs scored and six RBI.
The Blue and White, which posted its highest scoring output since defeating Temple 35-1 in 2006, registered 24 runs on 15 hits in the victory in just seven innings.
Andy McDonnell, making his first start of the season for the Hawks - his first start since April 1, 2009 - picked up his first career win for Monmouth, working 5.0 innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with a career-best tying four strikeouts.
In addition to Terry's career day,
Mike Casale collected three hits and three RBI, while designated hitter
Tim McEndy scored a career-high four runs - without recording a hit. Monmouth's 1-2 hitters,
Josh Boyd and Terry, combined for seven hits, eight RBI and seven runs scored to pace the offense, which also capitalized on 10 walks and five errors on Princeton.
The Hawks generated three two-out runs in the first inning to take a quick 3-0 lead over the Tigers, as Terry started the frame with a one-out single, stole second and scored on
Danny Avella's single to center. MU doubled its lead to 2-0 when McEndy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and grabbed a 3-0 edge when
Kyle O'Neill reached on an error, allowing Avella to cross the plate.
After a Terry double down the rightfield line, the Hawks took advantage of another Princeton error on
Cal Costanzo's at-bat, which allowed Terry to score and give Monmouth a 4-0 lead in the second. Casale followed with an RBI triple to drive in Costanzo and then scored on Avella's fielder's choice, inflating the score to 6-0.
Princeton pulled within 6-1 in the bottom of the second frame, capitalizing on a throwing error on the Hawks' inning-ending double play attempt.
Consecutive hit-by-pitches put a pair of runners on for the Hawks in the top of the fourth, which was followed by
Owen Stewart's infield run-scoring single, boosting the MU advantage to 7-1. Now with runners at the corners, Boyd bunted for a single to load the bases once again, and Terry cleared them all with a first-pitch grand slam to left, making the score 11-1.
The Tigers' Andrew Whitener connected on a two-run homer with two out in the bottom of the fourth to pull within 11-3.
Monmouth answered with a pair in the top of the fifth when
Anthony Lawrence lifted a sac fly to score
Bobby Dombrowski, who led off the frame with a double. The Hawks pushed the lead to 13-3 when Stewart doubled in McEndy.
Princeton notched a four-run fifth to climb within 13-7 on a sacrifice fly and Sam Mulroy's three-run home run to left off reliever
Stephen Prosapio.
Monmouth, which sent 15 batters to the plate, exploded for 11 runs in the top of the seventh, marking its highest-scoring inning of the year. The Hawks' frame included two bases loaded walks, a pair of fielding errors, and run-scoring hits from Terry, Casale, Boyd and a second from Terry, which gave Monmouth a 24-7 advantage.
Chris Perett tossed 1.2 shutout frames with three strikeouts for the Hawks.
Princeton starter Matt Welsh went 2.0 innings for the Tigers, allowing six runs on four hits and three walks.
Monmouth returns to action tomorrow, when the Hawks host in-state rival Rider University in non-conference action at 3:30 p.m.
