WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth University freshman left-hander Dan Smith, in his first career start, tossed a complete game one-hitter to lead the Hawks to a 3-1 victory over Temple University, on Tuesday afternoon.
Smith (1-0), who surrendered a lead-off single to Byron McKoy, worked 9.0 innings, allowing just one run, with five strikeouts and two walks in his first career win. Smith, who faced 30 batters - just three above the minimum - allowed one baserunner after the third inning.
Temple cracked the scoreboard in the top of the first when McKoy delivered the lead-off single to center, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and crossed the plate on Adrian Perez's groundout.
Monmouth knotted the score in Hawks' first frame as Ryan Terry laced a one-out double to left and scored on Jamie Rosenkranz's single through the left side of the infield.
The Hawks grabbed a 2-1 edge in the fifth inning when Mike Casale laced a lead-off double to the rightfield gap, and after being sacrificed to third by Bobby Dombrowski, scored on a Matt McEndy single up the middle with a drawn in infield.
MU tacked on a third run in the sixth frame on Kyle O'Neill's run-scoring single down the rightfield line, which drove in Anthony Lawrence (pinch-running for Nick Pulsonetti), pushing the Hawks ahead 3-1.
Rosenkranz went 3-for-4 in the game for the Hawks, pacing Monmouth's 10-hit attack, while Casale added a pair of hits.
Tyler Horst (1-1) was saddled with the loss for Temple, working 5.0 frames, allowing three runs on seven hits, with four strikeouts.
Monmouth returns to action tomorrow afternoon, when the Hawks travel to Seton Hall University for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game with the Pirates.
