RICHMOND, Va. - The Monmouth University field hockey squad dropped a non-conference game, 7-0, to Richmond on Saturday afternoon on the Spider's Crenshaw Field. The loss dropped the Hawks record to 3-4 while the Spiders improve to 3-4 in the young season.
The Spiders got on the board early and never let up as Katelin Peterson posted back-to-back goals off rebounds just two minutes into the game. Richmond then received two more goals, by Sarah Blythe-Wood and Hannah Hess, at 15 minutes and 19 minutes respectively, to put the Spiders up 4-0 going into intermission.
Richmond tallied three more insurance goals in the second half to seal the third victory for the Spiders.
The Hawks posted two shots on goal in the game with senior Enza Mazza (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) and junior Tara Brown (Abington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) each tallying one a piece. Brown also earned her first career defensive save in the game for Monmouth. Goalie Melissa Katz (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) posted 15 saves on the afternoon, giving her 69 saves on the season so far.
Monmouth was outshot in the game, 26-2, while also earning less penalty corner opportunities then the Spiders, 6-2.
At the tail-end of the longest road trip of the season, MU fell to Colonial Conference foe Richmond in the first meeting between the programs. After starting the season 3-0, the Blue and White have no dropped four games in a row.
The Blue and White finish up their road trip with a non-conference matchup against Virginia Commonwealth tomorrow afternoon with game time slated for 1:00 pm.
