HAMDEN, CONN. ? Monmouth University split a Northeast Conference baseball doubleheader at Quinnipiac on Friday afternoon, pounding out a 20-11 victory in game one, but falling 3-0 in the second contest. With the split, Monmouth moves to 25-20 overall and 12-8 in the NEC.
In game one, Monmouth posted 20 runs for a second time this season, while pounding out 22 hits, as each member of the starting lineup collected at least a hit, while eight of the nine in the lineup had at least two hits.
The Hawks notched an unearned run in the top of the first as
Brett Holland led off by reaching on a fielding error, and later scored on
Chris Collazo's RBI single up the middle. Monmouth pushed its advantage to 3-0 in the second when
Josh Boyd delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded.
The Blue and White scored three times in the top of the fourth, as the Hawks loaded the bases once again, as both
Brett Holland and
Nick Pulsonetti lifted sacrifice flies, and Boyd crossed home in a double-steal attempt.
Trailing 6-0 in the fourth, Quinnipiac answered with three runs in the home half, cutting the lead to 6-3, as the Bobcats collected six singles in the frame. Quinnipiac pulled within 6-4 in the fifth when Gabe Guerino's groundout plated a run.
Monmouth notched a six-run frame in the top of the sixth, to take a 12-4 advantage, as eight of the Hawks' first nine batters reached base. In the frame, in which the Hawks recorded six runs on five hits and three walks from three different pitchers, Holland and Pulsonetti delivered run-scoring singles, while
Ryan Terry scored on a throwing error, before Collazo's RBI single put Monmouth in front by seven scores.
Jamie Rosenkranz continued the parade with an RBI double, giving the Blue and White the 12-4 lead.
A pair of walks from Monmouth starter
Kyle Breese, followed by two singles, made the score 12-5 in the bottom of the sixth, before Brian Monack connected on a grand slam to pull QU within 12-9.
With runners on second and third in the seventh, Collazo's infield single plated a run and
Paul Bottigliero followed with a two-run double to left center, putting Monmouth ahead 15-9.
Terry's single to right drove in
Bobby Dombrowski, who lead off the eighth with a double, to give the Hawks a 16-9 edge. Monmouth tacked on four runs in the top of the ninth to take a 20-9 lead, as the Hawks loaded the bases and Boyd, Holland and Collazo all added run-scoring hits.
QU added two runs off reliever
Tim Ballard in the bottom of the ninth to account for the 20-11 final.
Breese worked 5.1 innings for Monmouth in a win, allowing nine runs on 11 hits, while Ballard allowed one earned run in 3.2 frames to pick up the save for the Hawks, his first of the season.
Quinnipiac took a 1-0 lead in game two, when Guerino connected on a solo homer to right center off starter
Brett Brach.
Clinging to a 1-0 edge in the sixth, the Bobcats registered a run-scoring single and an RBI fielder's choice, to claim the 3-0 advantage.
Brach, who suffered the loss for the Blue and White, allowed three runs on six hits, with nine strikeouts and zero walks in six innings of work.
Monmouth returns to action tomorrow with another Northeast Conference doubleheader at Quinnipiac.
