BETHLEHEM, Pa.- Monmouth University junior Larry Lundy (Friendsville, Pa./Montrose Area) was named Doug Pollard Thrower of the Meet after an impressive overall performance in this weekend's Moravian Greyhound Classic.
Lundy earned the award, which is named after the former Greyhound Track & Field Coach, after setting the meet record in the shot put and placing in two other throwing events. Lundy's throw of 57' 3 ?” in the shot put broke the meet record, held by former Hawk Nick Williams in 2007. His mark also qualified him for the NCAA East Regional Meet in May. Lundy qualified for the IC4As in the discus with his third place finish, tossing the implement 158' 5”.
Hawk Christian Keller (Matawan, N.J./Matawan) took first in the discus with his throw of 167' 7”, while Vincent Elardo (Forked River, N.J./Lacey) claimed second with his toss of 160' 8”. Shawn Sabo (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) rounded out fourth place with a mark of 156' 3”. MU also took second, third, fourth and eighth in the shot put, with Lundy winning the event. Sophomore Tom Ciccoli (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) took second (56' 1 ?”), Keller claimed the bronze medal (54' 7 ?”) and Elardo took fourth (51' 8 ?”). Sabo finished with an eighth place throw of 48' 2”.
Rookie Geoff Navarro (Mays Landing, N.J./Absegami) was first in the 100m, crossing the tape in 10.92. Chris Taiwo (Budd Lake, N.J./Mt. Olive) was fifth, finishing in 11.08. Taiwo was also fourth int eh 200m with his time of 22.14 and fifth in the triple jump (44' 4 ?”). Chris Rutherford (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) earned the silver medal in the 110 hurdles with his time of 15.01. Rutherford also earned fourth place in the 400m hurdles (54.28) while Stevenson Cajuste (Egg Harbor, N.J./Egg Harbor) ran a season-best 54.52 which was fifth place. Cajuste was also sixth in the 110 hurdles (15.75) and fifth in the long jump (22' 1 ?”). His distance of 42' 9” was eighth place in the triple jump.
Billy Dowd's (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) steeplechase time of 10:06.95 gave the junior a second place finish in the fan-favorite event. Julio Rodriguez's (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) high jump of 6' ?” was third overall while John Krajunas (West Keansburg, N.J./Raritan) took sixth. Senior Chris Tanzola (Long Valley, N.J./Mt. Olive) was seventh in the 110 hurdles, crossing the tape in 15.83.
Pete Matano (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) took third place in the pole vault clearing the bar at 13' 11” while fellow rookies Jason Timmons (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and George Mena (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) tied for eighth, clearing 13' 5”.
The javelin had Victor Rizzotto (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) taking third (198' 11”), Marion Easley (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) earning fifth (189' 5”) and Matt Mizerek (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) taking seventh. Eric Paul (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) eclipsed his personal best by more than 17 feet in the event with a throw of 178' 6” for 10th place.
Eric Fay (Yatesville, Pa./Pittston Area) placed eighth in the 400m (49.87) while Garth DeBlasio (Millstone, N.J./Allentown) was fifth in the 1500m with a time of 4:02.86. Ben Hutterer (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) was seventh in the same event, crossing the line in 4:02.95. Current coach Devin Barry was fourth place in the 110 hurdles. MU's 4x400 relay team of Colton Langianese (Lewis Run, Pa./Bradford Area), Navarro, Vin Improta (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Tech) and Dan Fitzpatrick (Manasquan, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) was sixth. Joshua Lewis (Montville, N.J./Montville) took fourth in the long jump (22' 2 ?”) with Jason Kelsey (Ramsey, N.J./Don Bosco) eighth and Alex Bowers (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) ninth.
Select Hawks will compete in next week's prestigious Penn Relays while others will compete at the Lehigh Games on Saturday.
