BASEBALL HANDED PAIR OF 3-1 LOSSES BY WAGNER

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. ? The Monmouth University baseball team dropped a pair of 3-1 decisions to visiting Wagner in a Northeast Conference doubleheader, on Saturday afternoon. MU drops to 18-16 overall and 7-4 in the league, while the Seahawks improve to 16-14 and 6-5 in the NEC.

Monmouth got out of the top of the first frame in game one when catcher Bobby Dombrowski threw out two Wagner baserunners, Damian Csakai and Jared Gruccio on steal attempts.

WC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Seth Boyd legged out a lead-off double to the gap in right center, and came around to score on Chris Drechsel's one-out, single up the middle.

Vin Avella's double to left center in the top of the third, plated Damian Csakai, who led off the frame with an infield single, pushing the Seahawks ahead 2-0.

After a lead-off walk was issued to Csakai, Gruccio's single put runners on the corners with no outs, against Ryan Buch. The Seahawks would load the bases against the MU junior, who gave way to Nick McNamara. Boyd helped push Wagner's third run across with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring the Seahawks' lead-off batter.

Freshman Josh Boyd got the Blue and White on the board in the bottom of the fifth when he tripled down the right field line, scoring Dombrowski, who reached via a walk.

Nick Pulsonetti laced a one-out single through the left side in the sixth, and Rick Nierderhaus was hit by an Andrew Huebner curveball to put two runners on. Chris Collazo singled to right center to load the bases for the Hawks, who were unable to capitalize on the scoring chance.

Jack Rice earned his first win of the season for the Seahawks while Huebner picked up his NEC-leading sixth save of the campaign.

Buch, who took the loss to fall to 4-3 in the first game, went 4.0 innings, surrendering nine hits and three runs, all of which were earned, to go along with five strikeouts and two walks. McNamara tossed three shutout innings for the Hawks, allowing no hits, to keep Monmouth within striking distance.

Pulsonetti opened the second game's scoring when he drove a single through the left side, plating Holland who reached on a single.

The Seahawks evened the contest at 1-1 in the top of the fifth when Joe Jamison singled off of reliever Steve Sanguiliano, driving in Brian Martutartus. WC took the lead at 2-1 after Jamison came around to score one batter later on a throwing error. Wagner added another run when catcher Chris Drechsel singled, scoring pinch-runner Brian Battaglia.

Monmouth put runners at the corners in the seventh inning with one out, but unable to extend the contest.

Collazo became the 10th Hawk in program history to record 200 career hits when he singled to center with one out in the bottom of the second inning.

Monmouth concludes its weekend series with the Seahawks on Sunday when they face off at 1:00 pm.
