BASEBALL VICTORIOUS IN EXTRA INNINGS AT NAVY

ANNAPOLIS, MD. ? Monmouth senior Brett Holland's go-ahead single in the top of the eleventh inning, led the Hawks to a 7-5 victory over Navy, on Friday afternoon. The Hawks, who received a 4-for-6 outing from senior Chris Collazo, improve to 2-6 on the season.

In a 5-5 ballgame in the top of the eleventh, Holland delivered a two-out, infield single, which drove in Rick Niederhaus from third. Niederhaus started the rally with a one-out single, which was followed by Mike Casale's single. After a Bobby Dombrowski groundout advanced both runners, Holland's single to shortstop made the score 6-5. Freshman Josh Boyd followed with a single up the middle to score Casale, giving the Hawks a 7-5 edge.

Navy strung together consecutive singles in the third inning, its first hits of the game, before a passed ball put two runners in scoring position. With runners on second and third, Michael Speciale grounded out to second base, giving the Midshipmen a 1-0 lead.

After a Holland bunt single and a walk to Boyd, Collazo's third hit of the game, a single through the right side, tied the score at 1-1, in the top of the fifth.

Navy retook the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the fifth frame when Mike Guadagnini led off with a double down the leftfield line, and came around on Speciale's single to left.

The Hawks drew even again in the top of the seventh inning, as Nick Pulsonetti and Jamie Rosenkranz each drew walks in front of Niederhaus. With two outs, Niederhaus delivered a single to right field, which plated Pulsonetti and tied the score at 2-2.

In the next at-bat, Monmouth grabbed a 3-2 lead, as the Hawks executed a delayed steal. With Niederhaus breaking towards second, Navy's catcher threw down to second base, allowing Rosenkranz to break for home and cross the plate before Niederhaus was tagged retreating back to first.

Monmouth pushed its lead to 5-2 in the top of the eighth inning when Collazo laced a two-run single to right. Prior to Collazo's fourth hit of the game, Dombrowski delivered a one-out triple, while Boyd drew a walk, and stole second, putting runners in scoring position, with two out, for Collazo.

After pitching a scoreless seventh, Steve Sanguiliano surrendered a three-run home run to catcher Steven Soares, in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Navy pulled even with the Hawks at 5-5. Despite two walks, Brett Brach, in relief of Sanguiliano, got Guadagnini to ground into a double play to end the frame.

Monmouth, which advanced a runner to third base in the top of the ninth, stranded two Navy runners in the home half of the ninth, as Brach struck out the final two batters.

The Hawks, who loaded the bases in the tenth inning with two outs, pushed across the go-ahead run with two down in the eleventh.

Brach (1-0) earned the victory for the Hawks, working scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Monmouth's starter, Kyle Breese worked 6.0 frames, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits, while Sanguiliano tossed one inning, allowing three scores.

Navy starting pitcher Sam Long, who posted 13 of the Midshipmen's 16 strikeouts in the game, worked 5.1 innings, allowing one run on six hits. Drew Carlson (0-1) was saddled with the loss.

Monmouth, which collected 13 hits, was paced by Collazo's four hits and three RBI, while Niederhaus, Dombrowski and Holland each delivered two hits.

Monmouth returns to action on Saturday, March 14, when the Hawks take on UMass, in Annapolis, at 11 a.m.
