JERSEY CITY, N.J. ? Saint Peter's shortstop Conor Mullee delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to pace the Peacocks to a 3-2 victory over Monmouth in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
Monmouth, which had won 13 straight non-league games, falls to 34-14 overall.
Saint Peter's scored twice in the third inning to grab a 2-0 lead. SPC's first run came on a Monmouth error, which allowed Andrew Martirano to score from second, and Dennis Alexander crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Monmouth loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning, and cut the lead to 2-1 on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Chris Collazo.
The Hawks knotted the score in the top of the ninth inning when Ryan Terry led off with a double to left center, advanced to third on a Collazo single, and scored on Brett Holland's successful sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher.
Dennis Alexander started the ninth inning rally for the Peacocks with a one out walk from Justin Esposito. A bloop single to left then moved Alexander to third, before Mullee picked up the game-winning RBI single.
Kyle Higgins went 2-for-3 at the top of the order for the Hawks, while Terry and Collazo each collected two hits as well.
Freshman John McDonald made his first career start for Monmouth, working 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on no hits, but four walks.
Kyle Breese (2.1), Tim Dexter (0.2) and Nick Vallillo (2.1) braced the Hawks in middle relief, all throwing shutout frames. Esposito was saddled with the loss, falling to 2-1 on the year.
Monmouth returns to action this weekend when the Hawks take on Long Island University in the final NEC regular season series.
