STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Wagner used two home runs to power its way to a 4-3 win over Monmouth in game two of a Northeast Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The loss, Monmouth's first setback since March 15th, drops the Hawks' record to 17-9 overall and 6-1 in the NEC, snapping MU's program-record 15-game win streak.
Wagner got on the scoreboard first in game two off Monmouth starter Matt Marc-Aurele, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Vin Avella collected a two-out single, and came home on Kevin McDonnell's double to left field to give the Seahawks the early edge.
WC pushed its lead to 3-0 in the third inning on Avella's two-run homer to left center.
Monmouth rallied to tie the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth, as Nick Pulsonetti led off with his team-leading sixth homer of the season, a leadoff solo shot to left. Chris Collazo and Ryan Terry followed with base hits, before Brett Holland's infield single made the score 3-2. Kyle Higgins then reached on a fielder's choice to plate Terry and knot the score.
Wagner reclaimed a lead in the home half of the fourth when Kevin Payne delivered what proved to be the game-winning solo homer to center, for the 4-3 edge.
Marc-Aurele (1-2) was saddled with the loss, working three innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Senior Tim Dexter worked the final three scoreless frames for Monmouth, surrendering one hit with three strikeouts.
Kyle Morrison, who gave up three runs on six hits, picked up the win for Wagner, while Andrew Huebner pitched a perfect seventh, to earn his sixth save of the year.
Pulsonetti and Collazo each collected two hits for the Hawks in the loss, Monmouth's first setback since March 15th.
Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, when the Hawks take on Wagner in the final game of the NEC series. First pitch at Richmond County Bank Ballpark is set for noon.
