STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. ? Monmouth ran its win streak to 15 straight games with a 1-0 victory over Wagner in game one of a Northeast Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
In the pitchers dual, sophomore Ryan Buch and senior Justin Esposito combined for a two-hit shutout. The duo out-battled Seahawk starter Joe Testa, who tossed a complete game four-hitter, allowing just one unearned run in the loss.
Monmouth, which had a base runner in each of the first three innings, finally broke through in the third frame, when Shawn Teters reached on an error and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. After advancing to third on a groundout, Nick Pulsonetti drove in Teters with a single through the right side for the 1-0 lead.
Buch, who surrendered a lead off single in the fifth inning, worked out of the frame with a double play and a strikeout, to keep Monmouth in front 1-0.
Wagner loaded the bases against Buch in the sixth inning, behind a two walks and a hit batter, but Esposito entered with one out and got Vin Avella to ground out into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.
Esposito registered three groundouts in the seventh to pick up his sixth save of the year, and preserve Monmouth's 1-0 victory. The senior, who has not allowed a run in his last four appearances, has earned the save in each of his last three showings for the Blue and White. Buch (4-1) earned the win behind 5.1 frames with six strikeouts. The right extended his scoreless inning streak to 19.2 innings in the game.
Kyle Higgins went 3-for-4 in the game, collecting three of Monmouth's four hits off Testa.
