WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. ? Monmouth field hockey notched their first NEC conference win of the season defeating Robert Morris, 2-1 Friday afternoon at So Sweet A Cat Field. Aggressive play, and a season-high 16 shots on goal, proved to be the winning combination for the Hawks as they are move to 1-2 in NEC play (2-12 overall).
“We attacked extremely hard from the first whistle and played a complete 70 minute game,” prided Coach Carli Figlio. “Getting a win is a great reward for this team that has worked so hard throughout the season.”
Swarming the Colonials side of the field all half, the Hawks got on the board 27 minutes in when senior Molly Passarella (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) one timed a pass behind Colonial's goalie Seeley to sophomore Katie Amundsen (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) for a flick shot goal.
With her second goal in as many games, senior Enza Mazza (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) notched the eventual game-winning goal just six minutes later for the Hawks. Dribbling past one defender and than faking out RMU's goalie, Mazza's slap shot in the left hand corner of the goal put the Blue and White up 2-0 going into halftime.
The Colonials cut into the Hawks lead with a goal 19 minutes in the second half, but Monmouth held on for the victory. Goalie Melissa Katz (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) made two stops on the afternoon to earn her second victory between the pipes this season.
Monmouth outshot Robert Morris 21-7 in the game and owned the corner opportunities 9-3. Leading the Hawks in shots on the afternoon were Mazza (four) and Amundsen (three). Senior Aubrey Clark (Petersburg, N.J./Ocean City) notched three shots on goal for the afternoon and Passarella slapped two shot of her own.
With the one-goal victory, the Hawks snap a two-game streak of one-goal losses to NEC opponents.
The Hawks return to action on Sunday, October 19th, when they host Saint Francis (Pa.) on Senior Day and Fan Appreciation Day at 12:00 p.m. at So Sweet a Cat Field.
