BRONX, N.Y. ? Three of Monmouth's best represented the MU men's tennis team this past weekend as the Blue and White competed at the Columbia Classic at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center in New York. Of the top 10 teams in the region, six of them competed in this tournament including powerhouse Penn, Columbia, Cornell, and Princeton.
“Having six of the top teams on the east coast in the tournament provided great competition,” said Coach Cook. “This tournament was one of the strongest we've ever played in.”
Representing Monmouth, Junior Corey Forrest (Ocala, Fla./Trinity Catholic) faired best for the Hawks as he reached the second round of the consolation bracket for the C Flight of the tournament. Forrest fell to Princeton's Shoji, 6-1, 6-1 but than bounced back in the first round of the consolation bracket beating Sacred Heart's Syer, 6-4, 6-3. In consolation quarterfinal action, Marist's Himmelsbach defeated Forrest in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 to end his tournament.
In the B Flight of the tournament, senior Benjamin Evenden (Cresco, Pa./Ridgewood, N.J.) lost in the first round of action to St. John's Kosut 6-3, 7-6 and lost in a tough first round consolation bracket battle with Princeton's Preyer, 0-6, 6-1, 1-0.
The Hawk's lone doubles team of Evenden and Ian Terpilowski (Mount Macedon, Victoria, Australia/Braemar) fell in the first round of A Flight action to host Columbia's Nichifor/Schneiderman team, 8-6.
Monmouth returns to action tomorrow afternoon, October 14th, as they travel to Rider for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference match.
