PISCATAWAY, N.J. ? The Monmouth University softball team scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to complete a 6-4 comeback win over Rutgers Wednesday afternoon in nonconference action. The win, which snaps a six-game losing streak, improves MU's record to 24-14 while Rutgers drops to 19-27.
Dawn Gilchrist (Newfoundland, N.J./Jefferson) drove in Jessica Nicola (South Amboy, N.J./Sayreville) with the tying run and Heather Gordon (Hatboro, Pa./Mount St. Joseph's) scored the winning run on an error by the rightfielder on the same play in the top of the seventh inning. Alexa Ferrara (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) drove in Gilchrist with the insurance run one batter later for Monmouth.
Gordon started the game in the circle and re-entered in the seventh to earn her first save of the year, and Danielle Ellement (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Newbury Park) pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to get the win to improve to 6-1 on the season.
Nichole Alvarez (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three stolen bases, which gives her 36 for the season and establishes a new Monmouth single-season record. She eclipses the previous mark of 35 held by Dawn Marino in 1995. Her 53 career stolen bases already place her in fourth place all-time for career swipes at Monmouth.
The Hawks trailed 4-1 after four innings before scoring once in the sixth and four times in the seventh. Alvarez, Nicola, Gordon and Gilchrist each singled in the final frame to push across the four runs and Gordon came back into the game and picked up her first save of the season.
Jaime Jurewicz (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy) went 2-for-4 with a RBI for the Hawks, who return to action tomorrow, April 26 when they travel to take on Rider for a 3 pm nonconference doubleheader.
