BOX SCOREBETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh freshman Natalie Hojnacki broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 78th minute to give Lehigh a 1-0 victory over Monmouth on Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks defense pitched its second shutout of the season, as Lehigh snapped a three game losing streak to improve to 3-4 on the season, while Monmouth falls to 3-2.
Each team recorded six shots and three corner kicks in an otherwise uneventful first half. The Mountain Hawks finally broke through, when freshman Lauren Glazebrook found Hojnacki unmarked inside the 18 yard box, and Hojnacki left-footed a shot over Monmouth goalkeeper
Katie Buffa (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) for her third goal of the season.
Lehigh, the Patriot League preseason favorite, out shot Monmouth 16-12 and each side had six corner kicks.
"We played a quality team today," commented head coach
Krissy Turner. "We played well, but just couldn't finish."
Buffa made seven saves for the Hawks, while both
Amy Hoyer (Trenton, N.J./Northern Burlington) and
Andrea Lopez (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) had three shots for Monmouth.
Monmouth returns to action on September 20, when the Hawks face Lafayette at 4 p.m., on The Great Lawn.
