MONMOUTH EARNS THREE FIRST PLACE FINISHES AT SETON HALL OPEN

WEST ORANGE, N.J.- Monmouth University's indoor track and field team opened up the 2006-07 season with four first-place finishes at the Seton Hall Open on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Kyle Hirschklau (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) and graduate student Ryan Connell (Nutley, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) led the way for the Hawks, with Hirschklau taking first in the shot put (16.01m) and fourth in the weight throw (14.04m). Connell took first in the weight throw with a throw of 15.29m, as Victor Rizzotto (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) finished in seventh in the shot put. Hawks also dominated the high jump, with three athletes in the top-five. Jude Rene's (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton North) jump of 6'-2" was good enough for first, whicle Kyle Adriance's (Montrose, Pa./Montrose Area) 6'-0" effort was fourth. Mike Buccheri (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) was fifth in the event. Rene also placed eighth in the 60 meter hurdles.

On the women's side MU had three top-five finishers in the triple jump, led by Jen Tarsan's (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) second place finish (10.61 meters). Jen Swan (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) and Marykate Walsh (Woodbury, N.J./Woodbury) also finished in fourth and fifth place in the event. Tiffany Hahn (Avoca, Pa./Pittston Area) and Laura Ankrom (Prospect, Pa./Butler) took fifth and sixth places in the weight throw. Ashley Huffman (South Setauket, N.J./Ward Melville), in her first action since sitting out her entire junior season with an injury, took fourth place in the high jump, fifth place in the 60 meter hurdles and eighth place in the shot put. Swan also finished in seventh place in the long jump.

"We just brought a small group of athletes, a mix of veterans and freshmen, to get in their first meet in a low-key meet," said head coach Joe Compagni. "The athletes who competed did a great job for us."

The majority of the team will travel to Princeton, N.J, on Friday for the Princeton Invitational. The field events will start at 4 p.m., with the track portion beginning at 6:30. Selected student-athletes will also compete in the Harvard Pentathlon on Friday and Saturday night.
