WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University men's soccer team topped defending NEC Tournament champion Robert Morris, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon, on The Great Lawn. The win improved Monmouth's overall record to 8-3-2, while the Hawks are now 4-0-1 at home, and have gone unbeaten in their last 14 NEC contests.

Senior Steven Holloway (Hamilton, New Zealand/Hamilton) put the Hawks on the board first, nodding in Tom Gray's (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) cross from the right flank at 10:21. The score upped Holloway's league-leading total to 11 goals and 25 points. Holloway has netted a goal in each of his last five outings.

The Colonials nodded in a goal of their own to tie the score at 1-1 in the 32nd minute, as Ryan Zabinski's corner kick service found Eric MacDonald at the far post for the equalizer.

Monmouth senior Jonathan Schmid (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) put the Hawks ahead, 2-1, at 64:00 when the midfielder gathered a ball that was headed out of the box, and laced a right-footed shot into the far netting for his first goal of the year.

Gray [pictured] carded an insurance goal in the 90th minute and put the Hawks up 3-1 with 51 seconds remaining, as the striker registered his third score on the season.

Monmouth, which has run its NEC unbeaten streak to 14 matches dating back to the 2004 season, is now 3-0-1 in league play.

Junior Daniel Schenkel (Campo Verde, Brazil) made three saves in goal for Monmouth, while RMU's Matt Felice made six saves in goal for the Colonials. Teammate Randy Samaroo was credited with a save as well, clearing a Holloway shot off the line with two minutes remaining in the first half, to preserve the tie at intermission.

Monmouth outshot RMU 20-10 in the match, and held a 7-4 edge in corner kick opportunities.

Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, October 15 when the Hawks travel to Mount St. Mary's for an NEC match at 3 p.m.
