Hawks Fall in Hard Fought Battle at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – A pair of late second half goals lifted Rutgers University to a hard fought 2-0 victory over the Monmouth University men's soccer team on Tuesday evening. 
 
The Scarlet Knights applied the pressure early, but Monmouth responded with a pair of saves from Herman Johnsen and pushed Rutgers back into the midfield several times.
 
Raul Garcia launched a shot in the 28th minute but the ball sailed high.
 
The Hawks and Scarlet Knights went into the half tied at 0-0.
 
Monmouth came out with energy in the second half and fired off two of the first three shots in the period. 
 
Victor Andersson was able to get off a solid shot in the 74th minute but Rutgers keeper Ciaran Dalton was able to get a hand on it and keep things scoreless.
 
Rutgers broke the stalemate at 76:59 as Dan Karsten scored off a set piece. 
 
Johnsen had a save for the Hawks and Kevin DeCapua recorded a shot on the other end as play resumed. 
 
Rutgers increased its lead to 2-0 at 85:05 as Karsten struck for his second of the night. 
 
Monmouth got off one more shot but could not connect as Rutgers claimed victory.

- It was the 14th meeting all-time between the two schools separated by just 36 miles. Rutgers leads the match-up 12-1-1.
- Herman Johnsen now has at least three saves in each of his four appearances this season. 
- The Hawks started five freshmen in the contest. It was the second straight match and third time this season that the Hawks have started five freshmen in a match (Fairfield, Temple, Rutgers).

NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Rutgers held a 19-7 advantage in the shots category for the contest. The Scarlet Knights put five shots on goal while Monmouth had two.  
- Rutgers finished with a 9-2 edge in corner kicks for the match.
- Ciaran Dalton made two saves in goal to earn the win for Rutgers. 
- Herman Johnsen recorded three saves in the loss for Monmouth.
