PISCATAWAY, N.J. – A pair of late second half goals lifted Rutgers University to a hard fought 2-0 victory over the Monmouth University men's soccer team on Tuesday evening.Â

The Scarlet Knights applied the pressure early, but Monmouth responded with a pair of saves from
Herman Johnsen and pushed Rutgers back into the midfield several times.

Raul Garcia launched a shot in the 28th minute but the ball sailed high.

The Hawks and Scarlet Knights went into the half tied at 0-0.

Monmouth came out with energy in the second half and fired off two of the first three shots in the period.Â

Victor Andersson was able to get off a solid shot in the 74th minute but Rutgers keeper Ciaran Dalton was able to get a hand on it and keep things scoreless.

Rutgers broke the stalemate at 76:59 as Dan Karsten scored off a set piece.Â

Johnsen had a save for the Hawks and
Kevin DeCapua recorded a shot on the other end as play resumed.Â

Rutgers increased its lead to 2-0 at 85:05 as Karsten struck for his second of the night.Â

Monmouth got off one more shot but could not connect as Rutgers claimed victory.
