Final Score
Monmouth 4 (5-0)
Lehigh 3 (1-3)
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Monmouth field hockey battled through its first road test of the season, edging Lehigh 4-3 on Friday night to remain unbeaten at 5-0.
The Hawks' defense stood tall in the final moments, fending off two Lehigh penalty corners in the last six seconds—including one with no time on the clock—to lock up their fifth straight victory.
Ava Zerfass scored the game-winner in the 50th minute, breaking a 3-3 tie just seven minutes after Kiki Mess tallied her second goal of the game.
Mess had given the Mountain Hawks the early advantage with a ninth-minute strike. Monmouth answered quickly as sophomore Claire Campen buried the equalizer off a right-side run and cross from Kelly Bowers.
The Hawks grabbed their first lead in the 16th minute when Anna Moors finished off a penalty corner, assisted by graduate student Lusia Schluter.
Lehigh tied the game on a penalty stroke early in the third quarter, but sophomore Stella Goddard-Despot scored her first goal of the season in the 39th minute to restore Monmouth's lead.
