WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth field hockey powered past LIU, 9-1, Sunday afternoon at So Sweet a Cat Field to improve to 2-0 on the young season. Six different Hawks found the back of the cage in the dominant victory.
Sophomore
Milla Frye opened the scoring 10 minutes in, and just a minute later junior
Anna Moors doubled the lead. Moors went on to have a career day, recording a hat trick to pace the Hawks' attack.
Monmouth carried a 3-0 lead into halftime despite a 17-minute scoring lull, but the Hawks quickly reignited their offense in the second half. Freshman
Alicia Vanderlyde netted her first career goal in the 34th minute off a rebound to spark the surge. Just eight minutes later, sophomore
Claire Campen drove down the right side and finished with her second goal of the season, pushing the lead to 5-0. Freshman
Florence van Doorn added her second tally of the season in the 46th minute.
Moors capped her hat trick in the 50th minute, scoring all three of her goals off penalty corners. Graduate student
Luisa Schlueter assisted on each of Moors' tallies, while junior
Lauren Relik assisted two of her goals and junior
Eulalie Brouwers assist the other goal.
Relik, who finished with three assists for the second straight game, also set up
Keely Bowers' penalty-corner goal in the 53rd minute. LIU finally broke through in the 55th minute when Gigi scored to cut the deficit to 8-1, but Bowers responded just 19 seconds later with her second of the day to put the Hawks up 9-1.
Freshman goalkeeper
Djoeke van Helsdingen entered in the fourth quarter and recorded four saves to close out the win.
