Monmouth Shines In Season Opening Win Over Cal

FINAL SCORE
Monmouth 7 (1-0)
Cal 2 (0-1)

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Seven different Hawks found the back of the cage as Monmouth field hockey opened the 2025 season with a commanding 7-2 victory over Cal Friday afternoon at So Sweet a Cat Field.
junior Ava Zerfass set the tone just 39 seconds into the contest, sparking a first-quarter surge the Hawks never relinquished. She was one of four Hawks to tally her first career goal, joining freshman Florence van Doorn, sophomore Keely Bowers and junior Hannah Tromble.

Van Doorn converted on a penalty corner in the 16th minute, finishing a feed from junior  Lauren Relik and graduate student India Shakespeare. Relik paced the offense with a career-best three assists. Claire Campen extended the advantage to 3-0 in the 22nd minute, cleaning up a rebound in front of goal.

After Cal responded with its first goal a minute later in the 23rd minute of the contest, Monmouth regained control, netting three straight to put the game out of reach.

Junior Anna Moors and Milla Frye picked up right where they left off last season, both connecting on goals on penalty corners. Graduate student Luisa Schlueter assisted both of their goals.

In goal, sophomore Charlie Bowman anchored the defense with six saves in her third career start

QUOTE
"To be able to compete against an ACC team of that level is exciting, we have a great foundation and it happened because of a total team effort. The work this group has put in—on the field, in training, and in their preparation—was incredible, and it showed today. I'm proud of how we executed, but even more proud of how we did it together. Now the focus is on carrying that same consistency and professional approach into Sunday and beyond. - Head Coach Carli Figlio
