WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – A late rally fell just short for the Monmouth University baseball team in a 6-5 loss to the College of Charleston in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) action on Saturday afternoon.
Back-to-back base hits to open the game gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead after one.

Monmouth answered in the bottom of the second as
Wyatt Hunt's double scored
Chris Walsh and tied the game at 1-1.

College of Charleston scored one in the third and three in the fourth and pushed its lead to 5-1.Â

Avery Neaves had an RBI single in the sixth that gave the Cougars a 6-1 advantage.Â

Monmouth began its comeback attempt in the seventh. Hunt reached on an error to start the frame and came around to score on
Harry Padden's single. That made it a 6-2 game.Â

In the bottom of the eighth, the Hawks loaded the bases with no outs.
Nick Lovarco lifted a sac fly to center to plate a run before Hunt delivered an RBI single and pulled the Hawks to within two, 6-4.

Jimmy Wigo took care of business in the top of the ninth and gave the Hawks a chance in the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back doubles from
Casey Caufield and
Jay Bant pulled the Hawks to within one, 6-5. However the Cougars were able to strand the runner at second and claimed the 6-5 win.

- The game was delayed just over two hours at the start due to rain in the area.
- College of Charleston leads the all-time series against the Hawks, 8-0 following Saturday's win.Â

- Three Monmouth pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts on the afternoon. It was the second straight game and fifth time this season the Hawks have recorded 10 or more strikeouts in a game.Â

Jimmy Wigo had a pair of strikeouts and now has six strikeouts in his last three innings.Â

Wyatt Hunt led the Hawks with two RBIs. It was his sixth game this season with multiple RBIs.

Chris Walsh all had multi-hit games for the Hawks. Caufield leads the team with 15 multi-hit games this season while Bant and Walsh each have 10.Â
- Bant drove in his team-leading 34th run of the year. He ranks second in the CAA in that category.Â
- Daniel Brooks earned the win for College of Charleston. He pitched into the eighth inning and allowed three runs on six hits.Â
