STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Monmouth University Softball opened its Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series at Stony Brook on Friday afternoon, falling 8-0 in six innings.

The Hawks had a few promising moments against the Seawolves, with freshman Clare Picone recording Monmouth's lone hit – a ringing double to left-center in the fourth inning – and also helping guide the defense from behind the plate.

Monmouth's pitching staff battled throughout the contest. Jayla Cadena made the start and went three innings, striking out two and working through early trouble. Olivia Lewis entered in relief allowing just two runs over 2.1 innings.

The Hawks' best opportunity came in the fourth inning when Picone's double and a Seawolves error put two runners in scoring position, but a groundout ended the threat. Stony Brook capitalized on a trio of multi-run innings, including a three-run homer in the fourth that broke the game open.
