PHILADELPHIA – Monmouth University's Field Hockey team put up a strong fight but came up short in a 2-1 loss to Drexel at Buckley Field on Friday afternoon.
The game was tightly contested from the start, with both teams going scoreless in the first two periods. Drexel – now 2-0 in CAA play – broke the deadlock in the third period when Pien Elsen found the back of the net at the 33:35 mark. Just two minutes later, Drexel doubled its lead over the nation's 20th-ranked team.
Monmouth refused to back down and made a late push in the fourth period. The Hawks were finally able to break through at the 49:30 mark when
Claire Campen scored off an assist from
Sofia Fouces, cutting Drexel's lead in half and injecting new life into Monmouth's offense. Despite this surge, the Dragons defense held strong, and the Hawks were unable to find the equalizer.
Campen's goal was her third of the season on her only shot of the day. Goalkeeper
Jessie Eiselin kept the Hawks within striking distance throughout the match, making seven saves against a Drexel team that fired 17 shots, nine of which were on target. Monmouth's offense was limited to just five shots over the course of the match.
