Troy, N.Y. – Monmouth University Men's Basketball Head Coach
King Rice was inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame Sunday as part of a 16-member class.
"This is an incredible, incredible honor and I'm truly humbled," said Rice as part of his acceptance speech. "This game of basketball is beautiful and it's been so good to me for my whole life. I'm up here because I was born into an incredible family."
Rice, a Binghamton, NY native, helped lead Binghamton High School to two state championships in 1985 and 1986, while being named Mr. New York Basketball and a McDonald's High School All-American. This led him to a four-year career at the University of North Carolina under Dean Smith, where he completed his career in the top-10 all time in assists and helped lead UNC to the 1991 Final Four.
Rice recently completed his 13
th season as the head coach at Monmouth, where he is the program's all-time winningest Division I coach and the only DI coach to reach 200 wins. He has three Coach of the Year honors and three regular season titles to his credit.
He was inducted Sunday evening, with ceremonies held in Troy, NY. Alongside Rice were 15 other inductees, including NBA legends Earl Monroe, John Starks and Calvin Murphy. Also inducted were Michele Benton, Tay Fisher, Darren Jahnel, Mike McGraw, Bob McKenney, Eric Medved, Ron Naclerio, Crickett O'Dell, Charley Rosen, Howard Triche, Joe Trimarchi and Lambert Will.
