Monmouth Upsets Top-Seeded Drexel to Advance to CAA Final

FINAL SCORE
#4 Monmouth (12-6) – 2
#1 (#17) Drexel (14-5) – 1

PHILADELPHIA – Freshmen Milla Frye and Claire Campen each scored in the third quarter to lift the fourth-seeded Monmouth University Field Hockey team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Drexel – the tournament's top seed – in the 2024 CAA Field Hockey Championship Semifinal on Friday.

The Dragons took an early lead when they converted a penalty stroke just five minutes into the game, putting the Hawks on the defensive. That would be all that sophomore goalkeeper Jessie Eiselin, who recorded six saves, would let in.

The breakthrough came in the second half as Monmouth's offense came alive, particularly in the third quarter. At 35:50, Frye, who was named CAA Rookie of the Year on Thursday, found the back of the net off a well-placed assist from Johanna Karlhuber, leveling the score at 1-1 and sparking a shift in momentum.

Monmouth applied continuous pressure, outshooting Drexel 6-1 in the period and creating four penalty corner opportunities. The persistence paid off when Campen delivered the game-winning goal at 42:26, giving the Hawks a 2-1 advantage they would never give up.

The Dragons, ranked 17th nationally, become the second ranked opponent to fall to Head Coach Carli Figlio and the Hawks. With the win, Monmouth will play in the CAA Championship game for the second consecutive season.
