Monmouth Tripped Up by Delaware at Home

FINAL SCORE
Delaware (6-4, 3-0 CAA) – 2
Monmouth (6-4, 1-2 CAA) – 1

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University's Field Hockey team put up a strong performance but fell 2-1 to Delaware in a tightly contested Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) matchup at So Sweet A Cat Field on Friday afternoon. The loss drops Monmouth to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in CAA play, while Delaware improved to 6-4 and stays atop the conference with a perfect 3-0 record in conference action.

The Blue Hens and Hawks traded first half goals to carry a 1-1 tie into the half. Delaware's Taylor Vaccaro notched her first career goal at the 7:40 mark, redirecting a shot off a corner try. Monmouth's Eulalie Brouwers answered with a beautiful play off a Hawks corner, deflecting a back-post pass from Calista Schwartz into the back of the cage at 19:32. Freshman midfielder Milla Frye also assisted on the play – her second of the season.

Monmouth dominated large portions of the game, outshooting Delaware 17-7 and generating eight penalty corners to the Blue Hens' one. Sofia Fouces led the Hawks' attack with five shots, but Delaware's defense, led by goalkeeper Cecile Van Eijck's eight saves, stood firm.

Delaware regained the lead late in the third quarter when Kate Fiest tapped in a goal at the 43:37 mark off a great pass from Janne Stoetzer, which proved to be the game-winner. Despite Monmouth's late push and multiple chances in the final period, the Hawks were unable to find the equalizer.
