Declan McDonnell's historic effort lands CAA Weekly Award

October 22, 2024

Richmond, VA - The Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) named Monmouth senior Declan McDonnell as its Men's Cross Country Co-Runner of the Week on Tuesday.

The honor comes on the heels of McDonnell's performance at the Princeton Fall Classic on October 18 when the senior led Monmouth's historic team finish. With McDonnell pacing the quintet in the 8K race, the Hawks accounted for their fastest 5-man average in program history.

Following McDonnell's lead, Sebastien Reed, Tennessee Tremaine, Tomas Barry and Nick Kuenkel all registered seasonal bests at Princeton.

"Competing against an elite field that included many nationally ranked schools, our men ran their fastest 5 man average in school history. All 10 men who competed in the race broke the 26 min barrier, another school first. The team is focused and looking to maintain this momentum heading into championship season," said acting head coach Damon Godfrey.

Individually, McDonnell crossed the line in 23:11.8 to claim 13th place out of 227 finishers.

"Declan's record-breaking performance wowed us all and was part of a special day in Monmouth University Cross Country history," said Godfrey.

It was the second straight outing that McDonnell broke the 24-minute barrier at the 8K distance after becoming the first-ever Hawk to do so on October 5 at Lehigh's Paul Short Run.

Monmouth returns to action at the CAA Championship on November 1 in Elon, NC.
