WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth field hockey was outlasted by #19 William & Mary in eight shootout rounds by a final score of 2-1 on Friday afternoon at So Sweet A Cat Field.
The Tribe's Allison Goodwin deflected in the game's first goal 65 seconds into the second quarter. Monmouth's
Annick van Lange scored her sixth goal of the season – and 57
th of her career – at the 5:23 mark in the third to tie the score at 1.
Meis Kengen and
Bente Steenhorst assisted on the goal off a corner.
Both teams would trade scoring chances through regulation and overtime, but ultimately were unable to convert as the game headed to a shootout.
After falling behind 2-0 early in the shootout, Monmouth rallied back with successful attempts by
Meis Kengen and
Annick van Lange to send it to extra frames tied at 2.
Johanna Karlhuber added another successful attempt in the sixth frame, but William & Mary answered with a successful attempt of their own.
The Tribe delivered the final blow in the eighth frame to win the shootout 4-3, and the overall contest 2-1.

- This was Monmouth's first shootout game of 2022, and first since March 19, 2021 (1-0 W vs. Vermont).
