MARIST TAKES ONE LATE FROM MONMOUTH BASEBALL, 5-4

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Trey Dombroski threw seven dominant innings, but Marist College (19-14, 8-5 MAAC) scored five runs in the eighth to steal the series opener from Monmouth University Baseball (18-17, 7-3 MAAC) Friday, 5-4.

Dombroski spun seven brilliant shutout innings, allowing just two hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. MU took the lead in the fourth when Dixon Black dove home on a wild pitch, and added to it in the sixth when James Harmstead laced a two-run double into the left field corner, making it 3-0.

With one down in the eighth, Marist had seven straight batters reach, including five hits, to ultimately take the lead. Gavin Noriega's chopper inside third was the difference putting the Red Foxes in front 4-3, before the visitors tacked on a run with a fielder's choice. Alex Barker hit a solo home run in the bottom half to cut it to 5-4 and MU put the leadoff man on in the ninth, but came up just short in the first home loss of the season.
