HEMPSTEAD, NY – The Monmouth University field hockey team defeated Hofstra by a final score of 2-0 Friday afternoon in Hempstead, NY.

Phileine Hazen earned her first career shutout, coming up with six big saves in a game that was tight from start to finish.

After a scoreless first half, the Hawks finally capitalized on their fifth corner of the game.
Meis Kengen whipped a pass to
Bente Steenhorst, who then setup Monmouth's career goals leader
Annick van Lange for the shot. From just inside the circle, van Lange fired a shot that beat Hofstra goalkeeper Merlijn van der Vegt to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

The turning point in the game occurred in the middle of the fourth quarter when the Hawks were able to kill off two minutes of 9-on-11 play when both
Aylin Aufenacker and
Katie Yoder were given green cards.

Senior back
Reese Bloomstead made a clutch defensive save in the 56
th minute to preserve a 1-0 lead for the Hawks.

In the final minute,
Jess Tucker batted in a rebound out of midair to give Monmouth insurance. The Hawks held on for a hard-fought 2-0 conference win.
