WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Monmouth University field hockey team faced off against the Stanford Cardinal Sunday morning at 10 AM. Monmouth suffered their first loss in America East conference play this year on a goal off post from Stanford with 36 seconds left in the game.

Monmouth started off strong with an opening goal from redshirt freshman
Maggie Downs (Toms River, NJ/Â Toms River North) in the second quarter to put the Hawks up by one. Stanford countered with two goals of their own at the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth quarter to give the Cardinal the lead.

Monmouth answered back with senior
Ireen Frenken's (Tilburg, Netherlands/ Odulphus Lyceum) fourth goal of the season off of a corner, which was assisted on by sophomore
Aylin Aufenacker (Hamburg, Germany/ Gymnasium Eppendorf) and redshirt junior
Aly Perez (Fairfax, VA/ South County). Stanford then took the lead with 36 seconds left in the game off of a shot that came off the post to put them ahead of Monmouth 3-2.
