WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Monmouth University field hockey team kicked off America East conference play against Vermont Friday morning with a shootout victory at So Sweet A Cat Field.
Hannah Schiavo shut the door on Vermont by scoring the final shootout goal to give Monmouth the win.

After a scoreless 80 minutes, Vermont converted its first shootout opportunity. The Hawks responded with a penalty stroke by
Ireen Frenken that was drawn by
Annick van Lange. After each side went scoreless in the second round, goalie
Ally Tarantino denied Vermont at the start of the third. Frenken then converted her chance to put the Hawks up 2-1, before Tarantino stopped Vermont in the third round of the shootout, leading to Schiavo's deciding goal.
