FIELD HOCKEY KNOCKS OFF #15 PRINCETON IN OVERTIME

FINAL SCORE
Monmouth 3 (10-5, 4-2 AE)
Princeton 2 (8-7, 5-1 Ivy)

PRINCETON, NJ – The Monmouth University field hockey team (10-5, 4-2 AE) earned their highest-ever ranked win by downing #15 Princeton (8-7, 5-1 Ivy) 3-2 in overtime.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead nine minutes into the opening quarter by converting on a penalty corner opportunity. The score would be evened up less than two minutes later, though, when a streaking Aylin Aufenacker found Annick van Lange in front of the Princeton net. van Lange rocketed a shot past the goalkeeper for her 14th goal of the season and 48th of her career.

Princeton notched the only other goal in the first half, scoring four minutes into the second quarter and heading into the break with a 2-1 advantage. Monmouth answered quickly coming out of the half when Hanna McKie found the back of the net 35 seconds into the third quarter, tallying her 11th goal of the year. Both teams were unable to score for the remainder of regulation, sending the game to overtime.

One minute into the first overtime period, the Hawks earned a penalty corner and were able to capitalize. Aufenacker sent in a pass from the end line to Lorane Vanneste, who had her shot deflected in front by Lieve Meidane. Meidane, the America East Rookie of the Week, was credited with the goal, giving Monmouth its fifth win in a row.
