WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Monmouth University field hockey team (7-5, 2-2 AE) battled the elements and evened up its record in conference play with a 3-1 victory against Stanford (3-5, 2-3 AE) on Sunday. It was the program's first-ever win over the Cardinal.
Monmouth started the scoring eight minutes into the opening quarter when
Annick van Lange took a perfect feed from
Aylin Aufenacker, netting her team-leading 11
th goal of the season. The Cardinal countered quickly early in the second quarter, though, when Lily Croddick found enough space in front of the net to fire a shot attempt past goalkeeper
Kate O'Hogan.
For the second consecutive game,
Hanna McKie converted on a penalty stroke attempt, putting the Hawks ahead 2-1 heading into halftime. McKie would find the back of the net again early in the third quarter, giving Monmouth an insurance goal on a penalty corner opportunity.
