WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Former Monmouth University Men's Basketball center Chris Brady has been selected to play for the Puerto Rican National Team at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Brady, a 2017 graduate of MU, is one of 12 players selected to the team and one of just two centers.
"Playing for the Puerto Rican National Team has a completely different feel and tone to it," said Brady. "Last summer I saw how passionate Puerto Ricans are when it comes to basketball, and every time I step on the court I know I represent them at the highest level of basketball. For my career, this is definitely one of the most honorable accolades."
"We're so happy for Chris, this is a great opportunity for him," said Monmouth Head Coach
King Rice. "Chris has grown into a man and moved his career to this point, and that's what it's all about. He had a great career at Monmouth and he's only getting better."
Brady has played two professional seasons to this point, beginning his career in 2017-18 in Germany with Hebeisen White Wings Hanau, where he averaged 9.8 points per game in 33 contests as a rookie. He played 22.6 minutes per night and shot 56.6% from two-point range. The center exploded last season while playing in Japan with the Fukushima Firebonds, averaging a double-double with 14.2 points per contest and 10.1 rebounds per game, playing in 52 contests and totaling 31.5 minutes per game. He also netted over a block per night.
While at MU, Brady was a four-year contributor and increased his scoring and rebounding output each season. He finished his career with 135 games played, which was the most in program history at the time and was just broken by former frontcourt mate
Diago Quinn this past season. Brady scored nine points and 6.5 rebounds per game as a senior, and blocked 150 career shots, third in program history.
Brady is joined on the national team by another former MAAC student-athlete in Manhattan's Emmy Andujar. The team opens the 2019 Pan American Games on July 31 against Venezuela, and continue pool play against the Virgin Islands on August 1 and the United States on August 2. The semifinals are set for August 3, with the finals coming the next day.
