WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 4 Monmouth men's basketball team punched its ticket to the CAA title game with a 74-64 triumph over No. 9 Campbell on Monday evening in Washington. D.C.
Monmouth, who will play in the CAA championship game for the first time in program history, will face either third-seeded Hofstra or seventh-seeded Towson in the finale tomorrow at 7 p.m. The game will air on CBS Sports Network.
Four Hawks scored in double figures, with Kavion McClain's 19 points leading a balanced attack. Jason Rivera-Torres had 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals, Justin Ray scored 14 and Stefanos Spartalis reached double figures for the second-straight day, scoring 10 points.
For the second day in a row, Monmouth's defense dominated, forcing Campbell into 23 turnovers and holding the Camels to 3-18 from three.
The Hawks forced five Campbell giveaways on the Camels' first six possessions and jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. After the Hawks went up 10-4, Campbell went on an 11-4 spurt to take a 15-14 lead before Kavion McClain hit the game's first three-pointer to put the Hawks in front. The teams hit nine of their next 10 combined shots, giving the Camels a one-point lead before Ball scored seven in a row, highlighted by a pair of putback dunks, to give the Hawks a 28-24 lead with 3:34 to play in the half.
A layup from Rivera-Torres accounted for the only points over the final three minutes of the opening period, giving the Hawks a 30-24 advantage at the break. Monmouth forced 15 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes, led by three steals from Ball.
Monmouth extended the lead to 10 early in the second, forcing an early timeout from the Camels. Campbell got back within four, but the Hawks exploded for a 10-1 run, going up 48-35. The Camels were unable to get closer than 10 over the final 10 minutes, as the Hawks continued to force turnovers and extended the lead to as many as 16.
Campbell, who only made one three-pointer until the final two minutes, made a pair from beyond the arc in the final minutes, but the Hawks were able to close the game from the free-throw line to secure their spot in tomorrow's championship tilt.Â
