BASEBALL DEFEATED BY IN-STATE FOE SETON HALL, 6-3

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ –Monmouth University Baseball (14-20-1) got three hits from Zach Schild (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but fell short Tuesday afternoon to Seton Hall University (16-17), 6-3.

Monmouth jumped to a quick 2-0 lead after consecutive singles and a wild pitch opened the first inning. A Schild ground out plated the first, and Nick Campana (Downington, PA/Downingtown West) drove in the next with a line drive single to left. Seton Hall answered in the third with a three-run inning, with Tyler Shedler-MacAvoy driving in a pair with a triple. Sebastiano Santorelli's bunt single gave the Pirates a 3-2 lead, and Alex Clyde's fourth-inning single put SHU up 4-2.

MU got one back in the sixth to trim the deficit to a run, doing the damage with two away. Kyle Norman (Ellicott City, MD/Good Counsel/Buffalo) walked and went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Schild's single to right. Christian Del Castillo singled home a run in the seventh, and the Pirates added a run on an error in the eighth to lead 6-3. MU put runners on the corners with one down in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate but could not convert.

-Michael Dimino delivered his fifth scoreless outing in seven appearances.

-Kyle Ajjan took his first loss, allowing four runs on five hits in five innings.
-Nick Payero earned the win, his first, with three shutout relief innings.
-Corey Sawyer allowed two hits but no runs in the ninth to earn his fourth save.

-Monmouth heads to Columbia tomorrow for a 3:30 p.m. matchup with the Lions. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
