RICHMOND, VA – Monmouth University Baseball (6-11-1) battled back from a five-run deficit to take the lead, ultimately tying the University of Richmond (11-5-1) 6-6 after darkness halted the game after 13 innings. Three Monmouth freshmen relievers combined to fire seven shutout relief innings on the day, and
Max Goione's (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven/Siena) three-run triple led MU offensively. It marked Monmouth's first tie since the 2013 season.
Richmond jumped to a 5-0 lead, scoring two in the first without a run-scoring hit. The Spiders added a run in the third on Mark Ready's RBI single, and made it 5-0 with two more coming across in the fourth, one scoring on Kyle Schmidt's RBI double.
MU mounted a comeback beginning in the fifth, getting a
Danny Long (Sellersville, NJ/Pennridge) RBI single before
Kyle Norman (Ellicott City, MD/Good Counsel/Buffalo) drove one in as well, cutting it to 5-2. In the sixth, three straight hits culminated in an MU run as
JD Andreessen (Depew, NY/Lancaster/Campbell) drove one in with a base hit up the middle before Goione laced one off the third base bag, clearing the bases for a three-run triple to put the Hawks up 6-5.
After Brian Schaub's solo home run tied the game for Richmond in the sixth, neither team would score again. Monmouth's best opportunity came in the 10
th, when
Robbie Holmes (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards) singled with two aboard and two away but
Zach Schild (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) was cut down at the plate on a close play.
Nick Houghton (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) used double plays to end both the 10
th and 11
th innings, and neither team threatened in the 12
th or 13
th before the contest was called due to darkness.
