FARMVILLE, VA – Behind an offensive outburst and stellar relief pitching, Monmouth University Baseball (6-11) rolled to its third win in a row over Longwood University (7-13) Tuesday afternoon in Farmville, VA, 17-3. Freshman
Robbie Holmes (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards) drove in four runs to lead an MU offense that saw every starter record a hit and total a season-high 17 runs, while
Regan Dombroski (Manasquan, NJ/Wall) fanned nine out of the bullpen, the most strikeouts by an MU pitcher this season.
The MU scoring got started early, as
JD Andreessen (Depew, NY/Lancaster/Campbell) doubled for the fourth game in a row to score a pair and make it 2-0. Grant Keller hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first for Longwood, part of a two-run first for the home team to tie the game. The Lancers added another in the second on a Keller sacrifice fly to take their only lead of the game before the Hawks scored 15 unanswered runs.
Monmouth's offensive run began with a three-run third to regain the lead, with
JP Walsh (Spring Brook Township, PA/North Pocono) driving in a run for the third game in a row before a pair of wild pitches brought across two more to make it 5-3 MU. The Hawks followed that by blowing it wide open with a seven-run fourth, beginning with
Kyle Norman's (Ellicott City, MD/Good Counsel/Buffalo) RBI single.
Zach Schild (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) drove in two of his three on the day with a two-run single up the middle before Holmes struck with the big blow, a three-run triple that he scored on after a throwing error to widen the lead to 12-3.
Dombroski came on to start the fourth, starting an outing that culminated in a career-high nine strikeouts while allowing just one base runner. The right-hander set down the first 10 batters he faced, and did not walk a batter. Schild walked to force in a fifth-inning run ahead of
Johnny Zega's (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) two-run double, and Holmes notched an infield hit to plate a fourth run in the inning, making it 16-3 Hawks.
Clay Koniencki (Schwenksville, PA/Malvern Prep) came off the bench to notch an RBI double in the ninth as freshman
Michael Dimino (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) fired a pair of perfect innings to finish it off, including striking out the side in the ninth.
NOTES AND QUOTES
"Overall a good day.  We certainly have a great deal to work on, however we are making a lot of progress. Offensively, we capitalized on some big hits and our ability to grind out at bats and work some walks. Three big innings early in the game were huge. Recently we have been fortunate to create opportunities and hopefully that can continue. Kyle, Regan and Mike pieced together a nice game and Robbie, Zach and JD all had timely hits that sparked us. JP has been a catalyst and always seems to be in the middle of things." – Head Coach
