WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DEFEATED AT LOYOLA MARYLAND

Monmouth Hawks (3-6, 1-0 MAAC) – 48
Loyola Maryland Greyhounds (2-8, 0-0 Patriot) – 64
 
BALTIMORE, MD – Loyola Maryland took the lead with 7:33 left in the second quarter and maintained it the rest of the game, defeating the Monmouth University women's basketball team on Friday afternoon, 64-48.
 
The Greyhounds pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Hawks 22-9 and taking an 11-point lead into halftime.
 
Senior Alexa Middleton (Philadelphia, PA/Abington Friends) registered a double-double for the second consecutive game, ending with 12 points and 12 rebounds, which both led the team.
 
Sophomore Lucy Thomas (Ocean, NJ/St. Rose) narrowly missed her second straight double-double, adding eight points and 12 rebounds in the loss.
 
Monmouth drops to 3-6 (1-0 MAAC) on the season, and will wrap up non-conference play at UAlbany on December 29.
 
NOTES AND QUOTES

-Loyola scored five early points off Monmouth turnovers, taking a 9-4 lead at the media timeout.
- Right out of the media, redshirt sophomore Jen Louro buried two triples, and Monmouth took a 10-9 advantage.
-The run got up to 8-0 after a Taylor Nason floater in the lane, and the Hawks eventually led 12-10 after one.
-The Greyhounds scored the first seven points of the second quarter, but Monmouth answered with scores from Middleton and sophomore Alexa Wallace.
-Loyola ended the second quarter on a 15-5 run and took a 32-21 lead at the break.
-Two straight layups from Thomas and Middleton cut the deficit to eight, but the Greyhounds used an 8-0 run to go up 47-31.
-The Greyhounds kept their foot on the gas in the fourth, outscoring the Hawks 17-15 for the eventual win.
 
NUMBERS CRUNCH
-Middleton now has 13 double-doubles in her career. The senior ranks 10th all-time with 707 career rebounds.
-Monmouth shot just 3-25 (12%) from long range. Loyola went 9-16 (56.3%).
-The Hawks were 9-12 (75%) from the free throw line, including 6-7 from Middleton.
-Monmouth turned the ball over 23 times, compared to the Greyhounds' 10.
-Senior Akilah Jennings added six points and six boards.
-The Hawks won the rebounding battle, 41-33.
-The NCAA leader in steals per game, Loyola's Stephanie Karcz had nine today.
-Loyola had a 29-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
 
UP NEXT
Monmouth will travel to UAlbany for the non-conference finale on Sunday, December 29. The teams have each won a game in the all-time series, with the Hawks taking a 64-56 win in West Long Branch last season. Sierra Green led the team with 15 points on three triples.
