WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Stanford's Sarah Johnson hammered in a deflected ball off a corner on the far post with 1:56 left in regulation to give the 17th-ranked Cardinal a 2-1 victory over No. 20 Monmouth, Sunday afternoon in the America East Field Hockey Championship on So Sweet A Cat Field.
The Hawks, who had their nine-game winning streak snapped, finishes the season at 14-5, while Stanford, which improves to 15-6, earns the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
Despite trailing 1-0 at half, Monmouth kept Stanford's high-powered offense at bay, limiting the Cardinal to just three shots without yielding an attacking corner through the first 30 minutes. The Hawks evened the score 1:28 into the second half as senior
Josephine van der Hoop (Rotterdam, The Netherlands / Wolfert van Borselen) tipped in a corner shot from
Ireen Frenken (Tilburg, Netherlands / Odulphus Lyceum) for the lone goal Stanford surrendered in the tournament.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Kate O'Hogan (Dublin, Ireland / Mount Anville Secondary) made five of her 10 saves in the fourth quarter, fighting off seven corner chances from Stanford in the final 15 minutes.
O'Hogan along with
Meg de Lange (Johannesburg, South Africa / St. Mary's Waverley) and
Yasmin Pratt (Wicklow, Ireland / Kilkenny College HS) were added to the America East All-Championship team.
