No. 23 Monmouth 1 (9-4, 3-0 AE)
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ –
Josephine van der Hoop (Rotterdam, The Netherlands / Wolfert van Borselen) scored the game's lone goal 25 seconds into the second overtime to send the No. 23 Monmouth University field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over No. 22 University at Albany, Friday afternoon in America East play on So Sweet A Cat Field.
With the victory, Monmouth's first win over a ranked opponent in program history, the Hawks clinch a berth in the America East Championship, which will be hosted by the highest East Division seed November 7-9.
Following 70 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Hawks began the second overtime in a player-up situation. After the restart,
Ireen Frenken (Tilburg, Netherlands / Odulphus Lyceum) collected the ball near the sideline and sent a pass to
Annick van Lange (Sint-Job, Belgium / Annuntia Institute) near the attacking-25. The sophomore found freshman
Yasmin Pratt (Wicklow, Ireland / Kilkenny College HS) outside the circle where she drove to the endline and sent a cross to the center of the circle where van der Hoop swept in the game-winner through the five-hole of the UAlbany keeper.
Kate O'Hogan (Dublin, Ireland / Mount Anville Secondary) made three saves, including a pad and blocker save in the first quarter, for her second shutout of the season.
The two sides were nearly even through the first half with the Hawks holding an edge in both shots, 6-5, and corners, 5-4. UAlbany earned a corner in the third, while the Hawks attempted an attacking corner in the fourth, but neither team could find the back of the cage.
