EASTON, PA – Monmouth had its seven-game win streak stopped Wednesday at Lafayette, 11-5, as the Leopards scored five times in the first and didn't look back.
Brandon Taylor (North Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy) collected his first career hit for Monmouth with a double, and three Leopards had three-hit afternoons.
Danny Long (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) led off the game with a home run to give MU an early lead, but Lafayette answered with a five-run first to take control. Lafayette put the first three runners aboard before Steve Cohen drove in the first run with a base hit, and after a bases loaded walk and a run on a wild pitch, Hunter Silvernail drove in his first runs of the day with a two-run single to make it 5-1 in favor of the home team.
Silvernail was the catalyst of a three-run third with another two-run base hit to extend it to 8-1 Lafayette before Monmouth battled back in the fifth.
Nick Campana (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) walked with the bases loaded to plate a run before
Pete Papcun (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) singled home another to trim it to 8-3. MU left the bases loaded in the frame.
Cohen homered leading off the sixth, and Trey Durrah hit a two-run shot in the seventh to make it 11-3. MU got a pair back in the ninth, with Taylor sparking it with his two-out double.
Clay Koniencki (Schwenksville, PA/Malvern Prep) came off the bench to double in a run, and
Matt Graber (Newton, MA/Dexter) capped the scoring with an RBI single.
