MONMOUTH BASEBALL DROPS PAIR OF 4-3 DECISIONS AT QU

HAMDEN, CT – Monmouth Baseball battled back to come from behind in both games, but ultimately fell to Quinnipiac in a pair of 4-3 contests Sunday in Hamden, CT. After tying the game in the seventh inning of the first game, QU's Liam Scafariello hit a walk-off single. MU also came back in the seventh to take the lead in the nine-inning nightcap, but Ben Gibson ultimately won the game for the home team in the 11th inning.

In the opener, freshman John Martin (Red Bank, NJ/Middletown South) retired the first eight Bobcats in his first career start as MU took a 2-0 lead. Justin Trochiano (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) plated a run with a second-inning single, and Zach Schild (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) plated the second with an RBI ground out in the third. QU answered in the fourth, getting two singles to open the frame before Scafariello hit a three-run homer to make it 3-2 Bobcats.

The Hawks came into their final at bat down a run, and loaded the bases with one out before Shaine Hughes' (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) fielder's choice tied the game. In the bottom of the inning, a single and a walk put two aboard before Scafariello singled the other way for the game-winning run.

MU jumped to a 1-0 lead in the nightcap as well, scoring on Schild's RBI single. Anthony Cruz doubled to tie the game in the second, and Brian Moskey gave the Bobcats the advantage in the third. Dan Klepchick (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) settled in to face one over the minimum in the next four innings, giving the Hawks a chance to take the lead. Danny Long (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) singled home Trochiano to tie the game, and Hughes added another fielder's choice to put the Hawks on top.

Quinnipiac rallied in the eighth to score on Moskey's double down the line with two outs, making it 3-3. The Hawks were unable to score despite loading the bases in the ninth, and left a runner at third in the 11th. In the home 11th, Moskey singled and went to second on an error before scoring on Gibson's single to left to give QU the series sweep.
