Monmouth, winners of five straight, claimed its third MAAC Title in program history. The Hawks overwhelmed Sacred Heart in the MAAC Semifinals, 7-1, before holding off Fairfield, 2-1, in the finals. Sophomore Ireen Frenken and senior Georgia Garden Bachop, the All-MAAC Championship Team Most Valuable Player, both scored second half goals against the Stags, while the Hawks' defense did not allow a shot in the final 11 minutes to hold on for the one-goal victory. Frenken and Garden Bachop were joined on the All-MAAC Championship team by junior Josephine van der Hoop, who finished the tournament weekend with six points (2 g, 2 a) and freshman Annick van Lange.
William & Mary earned its NCAA Tournament berth by stunning No. 14 Delaware in overtime in the CAA finals. Estelle Hughes scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute to secure the Tribe's first conference title. The Tribe defeated Northeastern in the semifinals, before upsetting the Blue Hens. Hughes was named the CAA Most Outstanding Player of the Championship, the first William & Mary player to the win the award. Kimi Jones, Christie van de Kamp and Cassidy Goodwin were also recognized on the All-Tournament team.
Scouting the Tribe
The Tribe enters the NCAA Tournament 11-7 overall, finishing the season second in the CAA with a 5-1 league record. Estelle Hughes leads W&M offensively with 30 points on 12 goals and six assists, while Woodard Hooper is tied with team-lead with 12 goals. Kimi Jones logged a majority of the minutes in cage posting a 1.76 goals against average and .718 save percentage with two shutouts to her credit. William & Mary has played in eight overtime games this season, a national high. The Tribe are 5-3 in those extra session affairs.
Monmouth Notes
- Monmouth, the 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Regular Season and Tournament Champions, makes its third appearance in the NCAA Tournament all-time. The Hawks are 0-2 in the NCAA Tournament, falling 4-3 to both Princeton (2014) and UMass (2016) at home.
- The Blue and White finished undefeated in conference play for the second time in program history. Over the five-game MAAC slate the Hawks outscored league opponents, 24-4, and outshot their foes, 119-22.
- The Hawks, who will join the America East next season, finished their six-year MAAC tenure with a 28-6 record. The graduating class of Georgia Garden Bachop, Kelly Hanna, Gab Girardi and Elyssa Okken finished their career with a 21-2 record in league play.
- It is the seventh time in program history and sixth time under Figlio that MU has 10 or more wins, while the Hawks ran its regular season home winning streak to 28 games, dating back to the 2015 season, after a perfect 8-0 year on the newly resurfaced So Sweet A Cat Field.
- For the fourth time in the last three season, the Hawks recorded a six-game winning streak, enjoying wins this year over Villanova, Vermont, Bucknell, Rider, LIU Brooklyn and Bryant during the run.
- Kelly Hanna has recorded a point in 10 of the last 12 games. The senior has 26 points on the year to increase her career total to 82 (three points with Rutgers during freshman season). Her 79 points with the Hawks ranks top-10 all-time.
- Georgia Garden Bachop, the MAAC Player and Offensive Player of the Year, enters postseason play riding a nine-game point streak. The senior, who leads the league with a career-best 16 goals and 37 points, has four multi-goal games to her credit. The New Zealand native, who has seven game-winning goals, enters the game ranked seventh nationally in points per game (2.47) and goals per game (1.07). She became the fourth Hawk all-time to be selected to participate in the NFHCA Senior Game.
- Gab Girardi has played 76 games in the midfield for the Hawks, earning the start in 58 straight contests. The senior has five career goals and seven helpers for 17 points.
- Annick van Lange leads the first-year players with nine goals and three assists, while Natalie McNamara has found the back of the cage three times. Lotte Boom has three points on a goal and assist, while Aly Perez has a goal to her credit and Hannah Schiavo has dished out an assist.
- Junior Annie Deusch entered the season with the most game-experience on the defensive line having played in nine games in her first two years. The local product, who started all 19 games this season, is joined by sophomores Ireen Frenken, who saw action in four games during her freshman year, and Hannah Schiavo who redshirted her rookie campaign. True freshman Lotte Boom joined the unit and started all 19 games.
- Two different Hawks have seen time in cage for the Blue and White this season. Sophomore Gabi Millan has started 10 games logging nearly 700 minutes and compiling a 2.12 goals against average and .661 save percentage. Freshman Kate O'Hogan has played in 10 games, earning the starting job in nine of those contests. The Ireland native has a 1.16 goals against average and a .694 save percentage. The rookie is 9-1 and with three shutouts to her credit.
- Eight different players were named MAAC Player of the Week this season with half being named the offensive player of the week. Georgia Garden Bachop (Offensive) finished with a team-high four honors, while Elyssa Okken (Offensive), Kelly Hanna (Offensive), Gabi Millan (Defensive), Hannah Schiavo (Defensive), Ireen Frenken (Defensive), Kate O'Hogan (Rookie) and Annick van Lange (Rookie) each were recognized once. Garden Bachop also scored some national accolades, earning NFHCA National Player of the Week Honorable Mention following a 10-point weekend.
- In its history, Monmouth has had 99 athletes earn all-league honors, while being home to six players of the year (Gina Chico-2000 [NEC], Michelle Pieczynski- 2012 [NEC], Alex Carroll-2013 [MAAC], Trish O'Dwyer-2014 [MAAC], Julie Laszlo-2016, 2017[MAAC], Georgia Garden Bachop – 2018 [MAAC]), five offensive players of the year (Michelle Pieczynski-2012 [NEC], Trish O'Dwyer-2014 [MAAC], Alyssa Ercolino-2016 [MAAC], Josephine van der Hoop-2017 [MAAC], Georgia Garden Bachop – 2018 [MAAC]), three defensive players of the year (Alex Carroll - 2013 [MAAC], Casey Hanna-2014, 2015 [MAAC], Julie Laszlo-2016, 2017 [MAAC]), three rookies of the year (Kellie Nurko – 1999 [NEC], Meg Donahue-2014 [MAAC], Tamar Klinkhamer-2017 [MAAC]), one goaltender of the year (Christen Piersanti – 2015, 2016 [MAAC]) and two coach of the year recipients (Monica Morgan Levy – 1999, 2000 [NEC], Carli Figlio – 2010 [NEC], 2014, 2016, 2018 [MAAC]).
- Beginning in the 2019 season, the Monmouth accepted an invitation to join the America East Conference for field hockey. The Hawks will join America East members University at Albany, University of Maine, UMass Lowell, University of New Hampshire and University of Vermont as the conference's field hockey-playing institutions beginning next year.
