FIELD HOCKEY UPENDS SACRED HEART TO CLINCH POSTSEASON BERTH

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Monmouth University field hockey team struck for three goals in nearly a four minute span to defeat visiting Sacred Heart University, 4-1, Sunday afternoon in the regular season home finale on So Sweet A Cat Field.  With the victory, the Hawks, who claimed at least a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship and a berth in the upcoming championship, completed their third straight season with an unbeaten record at home.

Sacred Heart opened the scoring in the 26th minute as Makenna Crawford connected on a loose ball in the circle that beat Monmouth starting keeper, Kate O'Hogan.  The Hawks answered less than four minutes later when Ireen Frenken played a ball into the circle that was tipped in front by Elyssa Okken to even things up before the break.

The Hawks broke the tie in the 62nd minute when Kelly Hanna inserted a corner to Georgia Garden Bachop on the left side where she swept a shot inside the near post.  Freshman Annick van Lange and Hanna both knocked in rebounds nearly two minutes apart to put the Hawks in front by three.
