SPARTANBURG, SC – The Monmouth baseball team was defeated by Evansville Sunday in Spartanburg, SC by the score of 15-3. Christian Holland (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) led MU with two runs driven in, while the Purple Aces totaled 20 hits to improve to 2-4, while the Hawks drop to 2-4 in 2016.
Evansville scored in each of the first five innings and put up six in the seventh to pull away from MU, beginning with a three-run first that saw Josh Jyawook and Jonathan Ramon drive in runs. The Purple Aces added a run via a wild pitch in the fourth before Ramon homered in the fifth to make it 5-0.
The Blue and White battled back in the fourth, posting a three-spot sparked by Shaine Hughes' (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) leadoff single. Holland later tripled home two runs, and Chris Gaetano (Madison Township, PA/Scranton Preparatory) singled another home to cut the deficit to 5-3.
The Purple Aces added two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings before a six-run seventh, started on a two-run double from Jyawook. Travis Tokarek collected an RBI single before the big blow came on a three-run homer by Korbin Williams to make it 15-3, the eventual final score.
Ricky Dennis (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) took the loss for MU, allowing five runs on eight hits in three innings. Jesse Fante (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) fired a scoreless eighth inning in relief. Austin Allinger started and got the win for Evansville, allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits through five. Jyawook had four hits for Evansville, who totaled 20 on the day.
MU is back in action on Friday for a matchup with Virginia. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. in Charlottesville, VA.
