WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ- Monmouth University's football team completed its second and final scrimmage of training camp on Thursday afternoon, in what will be the team's final tuneup before opening the season on September 5.
While a number of projected starters either rested or were limited, numerous Hawks who missed last Saturday's first scrimmage participated in the 80-play scrimmage.
"I thought we had some really good play out here today," said Monmouth Head Coach Kevin Callahan. "We seemed to move the ball pretty well on offense, however we are little disappointed we didn't get it in the endzone more. I liked the explosiveness, being able to get the ball to a number of different people. I saw some good flashes on defense out there and some guys who have the ability to make plays. One of the things the defense showed today was the knack to come up with a turnover and make a big play when we needed to get a stop."
The wide receivers made a number of big plays on the day, with senior Pat Gray (Westfield, NJ/Westfield/Hargrave Military) catching three balls for 112 yards. Redshirt Freshman Reggie White Jr.(Randallstown, MD/Milford Mill) had two receptions for 56 yards, including a 49 yard catch. Freshman Ugo Ezemma (Nanuet, NY/St. Joe's Montvale) had a pair of catches for 42 yards, including a 36 yard grab on the left sideline.
The defense wasn't without its big plays, forcing a pair of fumbles and keeping the offense off the scoreboard on all but three drives. Junior Jack Eisenstadt (Locust-Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair Haven) led the way with seven tackles, including two for a loss, a sack and a forced fumble. Senior Anthony McDonnaugh (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic/Salisbury School) had five tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble on the day.
All six quarterbacks received saw time, with the unit completing 24 of 40 passes for 347 yards. Devin Ray (Bernards, NJ/Bernards/Rutgers) went five of seven for 90 yards, including a 64 yarder to senior Pat Gray (Westfield, NJ/Westfield/Hargrave Military Academy). Cody Williams (Springfield, MA/Springfield) went four of five for 79 yards while Ben Onett went five of six for 56 yards. Onett took the first drive of the game 10 plays for 96 yards, capping it with a 12 yard run up the middle.
Defensive backs Deonta Fair (Pembroke Pines, FL/American Heritage-Plantation) and Kamau Dumas (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) each had five tackles on the day. Senior Jahmer Bunch (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Regional) made a last second pass breakup on a touchdown to keep the offensive unit out of the endzone.
Starting running back Lavon Chaney (Edgewater, MD/South River) only had two carries, but made the most of them scoring from six yards out midway through the scrimmage. Zach Welch (Middletown, MD/Middletown) had nine carries for 47 yards while senior Ed Royds (Mount Laurel, NJ/Shawnee/Navy) had a game-long 36 yard run as part of his five-carry, 64 yard performance.
