WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.-Â Senior RHP Adam Yunginger (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) threw six shutout innings and struck out seven and Monmouth scored in four separate innings as the Monmouth baseball team shut out Saint Joseph's, 7-0 at the MU Baseball Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks go to 16-19, while SJU falls to 16-21.
"Adam [Yunginger] was outstanding today," said Head Coach Dean Ehehalt. "I'm proud of the way we stayed together as a team throughout the game, making some very solid defensive plays as well as having key at-bats."
The Hawks jumped on Saint Joseph's in the second with a three-run inning on an Aidan Favia (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) RBI double on a ball deep into the gap in right center. Favia went to third when Justin Trochiano (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) reached on an error, and scored on a ball that was booted at shortstop hit by Robbie Alessandrine (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholic). With the bases loaded later in the inning, a third run came in when Kyle Perry (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) was hit by a pitch.
In the fourth, Trochiano lined one to third that was thrown into right field, allowing him to go to second. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt, he scored on a Shaine Hughes (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) single up the middle. In the fifth, Chris Gaetano (Madison Township, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) grounded one to first that was booted into right field, allowing Gaetano to go to third. Dan Shea (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) lined a single to right in the next at-bat to score him.
A walk and a hit by pitch ahead of a base hit to deep right by Gaetano loaded the bases in the eighth for Monmouth, and Ryan Bailey (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) lined a deep double to the warning track in center field to score two and make the score 7-0 Monmouth, which would be the final.
Yunginger went six, getting the win after tossing six scoreless, allowing three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. Mike Brambilla (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) worked three shutout frames to get the save, giving up two hits. Gaetano had two hits for MU, Bailey drove in a pair and Trochiano scored twice.
Steve Powles started and took the loss for Saint Joseph's, allowing three runs on two hits. The visitors threw eight pitchers on the afternoon, and Charlie Coghlin was the only SJU Hawk with two hits.
